Abstract

QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE PSYCHOSOCIAL CONTENT OF THE RETURN TO SPORTS AFTER INJURY THROUGH THE FILM “WALK. RIDE. RODEO.”

This research aims to qualitatively analyze the psychosocial content of returning to sports after injury through the movie “Walk. Ride. Rodeo.”. The research was carried out in the direction of document and content analysis methods, which are qualitative research designs. All the speeches in the movie "Walk. Ride. Rodeo." were transcribed before the analysis phase. In the following stage, the content transcribed by the researcher was watched again simultaneously with the film's images. After the scenes related to the psychosocial content of return to sports were determined, the expressions were coded. Based on the determined codes, themes related to the psychosocial components of return to sports were created. Findings revealed that injury, grief, rehabilitation, confrontation with trauma, mastery climate, and social support are the main themes that frame the psychosocial content of return to sports. Risk, call for help, mindfulness, and intervention were identified as the subcomponents of injury. Denial, anger, self-pity, and acceptance were the subcomponents of grief. The results confirmed that rehabilitation's key components are awareness raising, challenge, reframing, and goal setting. According to another research finding, emotion, meaning, clarity, encountering the truth, evaluating the past, and re-engaging are the main components of confronting trauma. Vision setting, strategy setting, coaching, psychological skills, and openness to experience were identified as the components that characterize the mastery climate. In addition, the determinant of social support in the rehabilitation of returning to sports has been revealed. It has been determined that social support provided by parents, athletic trainers, health services professionals, and peers are positive determinants of recovery. As a result, it is concluded that the mastery climate acquired before the injury is one of the adaptation's facilitators in return to the sports process. Moreover, conscious awareness, acceptance, challenge, reframing, goal orientation, creating vision and strategy formulation, psychological skills, openness to experience, meaning, evaluating past, and reconnection competencies are the factors that play a positively essential role in the construction of well-being.
