Abstract

MUSIC HAS NO BOUNDARIES: THE EFFECT OF DISTANCE VIOLIN EDUCATION ON PHYSICALLY DISABLED ACHIEVEMENT OF PERFORMANCE VIOLIN

Accessibility is one of the main sources of the problems experienced by physically disabled individuals. Accessibility problem creates inequality of opportunity between disabled individuals and other individuals in terms of their participation in education and training activities. Distance education, which continuously increases its scope and impact in parallel with technological developments, offers great opportunities to find a solution to the accessibility problem in front of these individuals. This study aims to examine the effect of distance violin education model on physically disabled individuals' achievement of performance violin. Pretest-post-test design with one group, one of the weak-experimental designs, was used in the study. Study group consists of three physically disabled students who are between 20-25 years old, have never received violin education before and use wheelchair. Distance amateur violin education was initially conducted with the study group in 2019-2020 academic year once a week for 12 weeks. In the classes conducted through the internet, Skype application was employed in the synchronous model and WhatsApp application was used in the asynchronous model. The data were collected through Violin Playing Skill Observation Form. T-test was utilized for the dependent groups during the data analysis. As a result of the research, it was determined that the distance violin education model has a positive effect on the physically disabled students' achievement of performance violin. Other results of the study include that the model eliminates the accessibility problems of physically disabled individuals to violin education, contributes to the equal opportunities in education, supports life-long learning and the internet speed does not allow simultaneous polyphonic studies. It can be suggested as a result of the study that this model should be used in physical disabled individuals who have accessibility problems, marginal and disadvantaged groups, and in situations where face-to-face education is interrupted such as disaster and pandemic.
