THE CONTRIBUTION OF CUBIST COLLAGE TO THE FIELDS OF PAINTING AND ARCHITECTURE IN THE CONTEXT OF TIME AND SPACE

At the beginning of the 20th century, in the transition from traditional art to modern art, time was added to art as the fourth dimension on the basis of the Cubism movement and Albert Einstein's theory of relativity. Thus, artists disassembled objects in the light of the simultaneity of time and space and reassembled them through transparency and spatial layering thanks to the collage technique. In Cubist collage, assemblage techniques are evaluated in three aspects: overlapping with arrangements that produce new meanings, layering as a multi-layered technique, and juxtaposition, which allows to achieve a contrasting effect by placing two objects side by side. As a result, thanks to Cubism, which is seen as a turning point in enabling the artist to act independently from the basic traditions of representation, and collage as its innovative technique, the work of art has enabled multiple discourses and readings. With this in mind, there is a need to examine the contributions of this technique, called cubist collage, to the field of architecture as well as art in the light of some points. The aim of the study is to evaluate Cubism and relativity theory, which are associated in the light of art and science, in terms of their common points in terms of the concepts of simultaneity of time and space, transparency and spatial layering in the context of collage technique, which is considered important as a method in painting and architecture. In line with this purpose, the tendencies of the artists who were influenced by the idea of Cubism and the collage technique both in terms of architecture and artworks were included. Within the scope of the subject, Pablo Picasso, George Braque and Juan Gris from the art of painting and Le Corbusier, Bernhard Hoesli, Richard Meier and Eduardo Chillida from architecture were evaluated with their sample works. Thus, the contributions of the collage technique as a creative combination method to both painting and architecture, its development and the fact that it is still a successful design method in guiding contemporary architecture have been demonstrated with examples. In this study, a literature review method consisting of published books, articles, theses and internet sources including theoretical information and visuals on the subject was used.
