THE EFFECT OF SYSTEMATIC INSTRUCTION ON STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AT ASSOCIATE DEGREE
The study aimed at revealing the effect of systematic instruction on student achievement in teaching Vocational Foreign Language and Unit “On the Phone”. Pre-test post-test control group experimental design was used in the research. The study was carried out on senior students at Marketing Program, Normal and Evening Education at Nevsehir Hacı Bektaş Veli University in 2012-2013 fall semester. Experimental and control groups were determined randomly. An achievement test prepared in accordance with systematic instruction was used. Independent samples t-test was used to investigate the equality of the groups in terms of gender and pre-test average; and thus, the groups were found to be equal. According to the analyses made after the experimental process, there was statistically significant difference between knowledge, application and total achievement averages of the groups in favour of experimental group. However, there was no significant difference in terms of comprehension level. Therefore, systematic instruction can be considered as more effective than traditional instruction in terms of knowledge and application level objectives, but not in terms of comprehension level ones. As a consequence, systematic instruction is more effective than traditional instruction since total achievement in experimental group is higher than in control group.
