Abstract
FROM PAPER TO SCREEN: SCREEN READING
The outcome of science, technology is continuously changing, renewing and diversifying and touching every point of life and thus, altering our interests, likes and habits. No matter how conservative it is, each individual, each society and each culture will inevitably change. The most effective and comfortable adjustment to such a change process can be realized through reading skill that is the source of our all knowledge, emotions and competencies. However, the evolution of technology, as in every field, affects the perception of reading skill, its culture and types. This situation is conceptualized in the literature under different names such as “computer-based reading activity”, “screen reading”, “reading from the screen”, “e-reading”, “electronic reading”, “digital reading” and “hyper reading”. The primary purpose of the current study is to determine the negative and positive aspects of screen reading by conducting conceptual analysis in relation to screen reading skill. For this purpose, national and international resources about the issue were reviewed through document analysis technique and then the collected data were interpreted. The findings revealed that screen reading is more tiring for eyes, mind and body when compared to reading from paper and thus, reduces the reading and comprehension performance of the reader. On the other hand, it makes some positive contributions such as fast reception of information, fast learning, understanding and transferring and enhanced communication.
