Abstract
PRESENTATION OF THE VERBAL EXPRESSIONS OF THE VALUES IN PRESCHOOL CARTOONS: TRT KIDS CHANNEL SAMPLE
Preschool years, throughout which many development areas begin to be built, have a role in acquiring the basic knowledge on moral values and later on in individual’s socializing. Studies reveal that such factors like family, school, teacher, friend group and media are influential in children’s acquisition of the values. This study aims to investigate the values and their presentation frequency in preschool cartoons broadcasted in TRT Kids; a channel of TRT Association which is a representative of public broadcasting with a claim of broadcasting within the terms of social responsibility principles. In order to find out the frequency of value expressions in preschool cartoons on TRT Kids, “Grounded Theory Method” of qualitative research designs is used. Sample groups of the study are eight cartoons (two episodes from four different cartoons) which are placed under ‘Preschool Category’ (named so by TRT) and are broadcasted between the dates 01.01.2013 and 30.01.2013 on 9.40-20.55 on weekdays and on 8.10-20.55 at weekends. As the data collection tool, a ‘category table’ was designed by the researcher. In data analysis, ‘frequency analysis’ is used showing the units’ frequency qualitatively (in percentages and proportions). Results reveal that in the inspected cartoons values like kindness, happiness, self-confidence, courage, hygiene, social help, responsibility, empathy, honesty, affection, friendship, sharing, cooperation and patience are included. In findings, the top 5 values are tabulated and sample scenes of the value with the highest frequency are provided. As some of the values are equal in terms of frequency, some tables comprise more than 5 categories. Values are digitized through frequency and percentage tables for each cartoon.
