Community and Belief: Sample of City of Portland, USA
From past to present, the protection of human rights in legal terms and the increase of democratic regimes paved the way for freedom of belief on society. The effect of freedom of belief on society that has been seen, provides opportunity from a homogenous belief structure of society to a society structure with belief diversity In this study, the aim is to determine the belief structure of Portland citizens in USA. For this purpose, at first, a list of all sanctuaries in the city was prepared. Denominational belongings were determined and sanctuaries were classified in details by negotiating with official staffs of each sanctuary. In the later parts of the study, single-question ("What is your religion") survey has been maden in Portland City of Maine State The analysis has been maden as a result of answers and classification of sanctuaries, gives idea about beliefs of the society in USA Maine State, Portland City directly. Therefore; Portland/ME city is a province which is home to various beliefs. With this feature, Portland is similar to Istanbul and Hatay in our country. A remarkable point of Portland which is rich in terms of variety of beliefs and sanctuaries is that the city gained this feature for the last 20-30 years, not as a heritage from past. Refuges, asylum-seekers and immigrants coming to USA especially from Islamic countries increased the variety of beliefs in the society. In Portland, an example city where freedom of belief can be lived in a social way, belief map can be said to have changed with this immigration movement.
