Abstract


AN INVESTIGATION OF THE OPINIONS OF TEACHERS OF SOCIAL STUDIES ABOUT THE VALUES EDUCATION
This study was conducted in order to investigate the opinions of teachers of social studies about the values education. The phenomenology design which is one of the qualitative research designs has been used in the research. The working group of the research consists of 11 teachers of social studies that work in a province of the Eastern Anatolia region. Data of the research has been gathered by using semi-structured interview form. The content analysis has been used in the analysis of data. According to the findings obtained, the values system is regarded as follows; as gaining of social values more in terms of the gender of male and female teachers; more values education as gaining of social values for undergraduate degree teachers in terms of educational background, as transferring of national and moral values to students for postgraduate degree students; as gaining of social values for the teachers that have seniority years between 1-5 years and 6-10 years in terms of seniority years, as gaining of the environmental values that individuals live in for the teachers having years of seniority of 11 years or more. The teachers pointed out that they try to bring the value of tolerance in social sciences course mostly, they use the method of case study and they face problems due to the lack of family support. The teachers made some recommendations that social sciences program should be arranged in accordance with the values education. Some suggestions have been made by the researcher based on the findings of the research.
