ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION IN FORMAL EDUCATION AND LIFELONG LEARNING ACCORDING TO TEACHERS’ VIEWS
Determining the teachers’ views about environmental education that has been applied in formal education and that should be applied in the process of lifelong learning education constitures the aim of this research. The study was conducted via interview technique which is one of qualitative data collection methods. 20 teachers who were selected via structrured interview form and purposeful sampling method and who teach in preschools, primary schools, secondary schools and high schools in central district of Sakarya province were interviewed. The data which were acquired from the interviews were analyzed via descriptive analysis method and those results are achieved: 1- Teachers think that the most important environmental problem is unplanned urbanization. 2- Teachers state that municipals are the most effective foundations, the most effective organizations are nongovermental organizations and the most probable effective people are politicians. 3- They express that schools can give environmental education in the best way. 4- Teachers don’t think environmental education which has been applied or which is envisaged to be applied in schools isn’t sufficient enough. 5- Majority of teachers have the opinion that learning outcomes of their own subjects with regard to environmental education are not enough. Besides it is stated that learning outcomes are partially or never applied. Within methods/techniques/activities that are used while applying learning outcomes, travel and observation mthod is the first, Project method is the second and lecture method is third preferred method. That learning outcomes are not suitable for learning by experience is the primary problem that is encountered in the application of learning outcomes. 6- More than half of teachers have the opinion that environmental education should be applied within the scope of lifelong learning for envrionment that we need throughout our life to be protected.
