Abstract


A TOLERANT AND DEMOCRATIC CLASSROOM SOCIETY IMPLEMENTATION
In this research, it was aimed to determine the effect of the activities named as “Respect and Tolerance towards Feelings, Thoughts” and “A Democratic Classroom Environment” developed to provide contribution upon creating a tolerant and democratic classroom environment upon democratic attitudes and tolerance tendencies of elementary education 4th grade students. For that purpose, the developed activities were tried to be implemented according to the methods of values education. In the study, pre-test and post-test control-group experimental model was used. The experimental group included 42, and the control group included 45 students. In the research, “Tolerance Tendency Scale” and “Democratic Attitude Scale” were used. In analysis of the data collected with these scales, independent samples t-test was benefited. As result of the performed analyses, it was noticed that democratic attitude and tolerance tendency levels of the experimental and control groups in pre-experimental process measurements were similar to each other. In post-experimental process measurements, significant differences in favor of the experimental group were noticed in democratic attitude and tolerance tendency levels. Furthermore, both democratic attitude and tolerance tendency pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental group were compared, significant differences in favor of the post-test were noticed. No significant difference was noticed when pre-test and post-test scores related to democratic attitude and tolerance tendency levels of the control group were compared. According to these results, the activities named as “Respect and Tolerance towards Feelings, Thoughts” and “A Democratic Classroom Environment” created a positive effect upon the democratic attitude and tolerance tendencies of the elementary education 4th grade students.
