A CRITICAL APPROACH FOR THE VALUES EDUCATION IN SOCIAL STUDIES
Values come into existence in the form of definite behavioural patterns in societies, by means of experiences and beliefs over time. Within the course of socialization, individual internalizes the values and sensations of society after having acquired them as behavioural patterns, in order to gain the sense of belonging by accommodating himself to the society. Thus, in the process of socialization, it is both significant and necessary for the values to be understood and learned accurately. Teaching values takes an important place within the scope of social studies classes as well as its being the point in question in every aspect of life. Social studies aims to enable one accommodate oneself to the globalizing world in accordance with his/her own culture; to make individuals realize life so as to raise efficient citizens who are aware of their rights and responsibilities; to enable them acquire knowledge, skills and values pertaining to social and human sciences; to provide solutions to the problems encountered, and also, to raise individuals who are able to make reasonable decisions. In line with this objective, it is required for values in social studies to have been projected to the period of education. Therefore, in the study, values included in the curricula for social studies class, the order being followed in teaching these values, practices for values education, and the association of values with family have been presented. In addition, social studies teachers are expected to have their students gain the values determined in the curriculum. If the education of values effectively in social studies class is to be mentioned, it is necessary for social studies teachers to have received values education. From this point of view, lectures given for values education at departments of social studies education in the faculties of education which raise social studies teachers have been analyzed. In the study, document analysis has been used. Data related to the study has been gathered from the curricula relevant to social studies class for the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th grades and from 61 undergraduate programmes for social studies teaching which are present at the faculties of education in Turkey and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the academic year 2017-2018. Data has been analyzed by means of descriptive analysis. In consequence of the research, the quality of values education within the scope of the curricula for social studies class and departments of social studies education has been discussed, and the actions performed and unperformed as related to values education have been evaluated by a critical approach.
