Abstract


FİRÂKÎ DEDE'S WORK CALLED SEG-NÂME
Being the source of numerous religious and national cultural elements, animals and animal figures have usually taken place in Turkish myths, legends, tales and stories. Turks lading nomaic life and making a living by husbandry are known to have adopted animals throughout their lives due to their such characteristics as 'guide, animal-patriarchy, prey and predator. Animals bestowed much more influential roles in art, faith and belief systems with the advent of Islam are undoubtedly among indispensible elements of literary works. In Classical Turkish Literature which has always had a word on humanity and humanitarian issues, there are many works in which animals are either are protagonists or secondary characters. Seg-Nâme/The Dog Book, written in both prose and poetry by Firaki Dede, known to have lived in the 17th-18th Centurty is on of them. In this work written on didactic grounds, Firaki Dede tells, on a 'dog' character, how he decided to write the work he called 'the article' after paying respect to the God, praising Mohamad the Prophet and his followers as a tradition. Beginning with the adventures of a dog assigned to protect the sheep of the House against starving wolves, the book goes on with the humorous narration of the dog's family tree and qualities. Comprising two chapters, while th first chapter deals with the creation and instincts of the dog, the second one includes the assessments of the dog's character and intimacy with the humans in an enlarged commentary way streching to Adam. In this sense, this work is both a kind of source of advice and a text pertaining to the nature of the dog. In this study, the work Seg-name-i Firaki, registered in “Fatih National Library, Ali Emiri, Poetry 665” has been introduced analyzed and released in full text.
