Abstract


METAFORIC PERSPECTIVES OF TEACHER CANDIDATES IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
We are experiencing a dizzying development in the field of science and technology, and these developments are influential in all aspects of our lives. In addition to benefiting from the blessings of science and technology, the innovations made in these areas and the pursuits of future studies are among the responsibilities of future teachers. Teachers who are not aware of scientific and technological developments and do not integrate these developments into the educational environment will have difficulty keeping up with the requirements of the age. In the rapidly changing world, the feelings and thoughts of the prospective teachers who will be responsible for the upbringing of future generations will be reflected in their educational activities. The aim of this research is to examine the perceptions of the prospective teacher candidates on the concepts of 'science' and 'technology' through metaphors. The sample group of the research is constituted of 120 teacher candidates who are studying at Bülent Ecevit University Ereğli Education Faculty Department of Basic Education Department of Classical Education. The data of the study were collected in fall semester of 2015-2016 academic year. 76 girls, 44 male teacher candidates were given blank papers without any orientation and they were asked to write the papers that are like 'Science ... because ...' and 'Technology is like ...... because of ...' expressions. The participants made up the data of investigating the feelings and thoughts of the participants through metaphors. The obtained data were analyzed using content analysis, six metaphors produced on the concept of 'science', and metaphors produced on the concept of 'technology' were classified into seven categories. While the candidate teachers seemed to have positive perceptions about the concept of 'science', they came to the conclusion that they were more in favor of the 'technology' concept, but in the more negative direction.
